Boris Herrmann is aboard Malizia II competing in the Route du Rhum 2018, a race that combines sporting challenge, scientific study and awareness-raising.
This is the first time the Yacht Club de Monaco has entered a boat in the famous transatlantic solo race between Saint Malo and Point-à-Pitre in
Guadeloupe.
"Malizia – My Ocean Challenge" is aiming to promote protection of the oceans, education of young people and scientific study of the marine environment.
Malizia II sailed from Saint Malo on 4 November, equipped with a sensor to allow scientists to monitor CO2 levels, temperature, salinity and pressure in some of the most inaccessible places on Earth. The voyage will provide valuable data for scientists to study the impacts of climate change on our oceans, particularly the less-travelled Southern Ocean.
In addition, throughout the race and as part of their educational mission, the Malizia team will be inviting young people on board the boat, to meet the crew and learn about protecting the oceans and the environmental impacts affecting the seas.
