Game, Set and Match: the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters starts next week!

This legendary competition kicks off the ATP Masters 1000 on clay. Once again, the exciting event is set to attract thousands of tennis fans from all over the world.

The biggest names in world tennis 

Who will take over the crown from Andrey Rublev? Last year’s champion will be defending his title against some of the most formidable names in world tennis: Novak Djokovic (world number one), Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev. The tournament director, David Massey, has announced that despite a series of recent injuries, Rafael Nadal will be taking part in the 2024 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

An exceptional tennis tournament

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is not just any tournament. It’s a genuine institution in the world of tennis. Founded in 1897, when it was known as the Monte-Carlo Tennis Championship, it is one of the world’s oldest clay court tournaments. From its very early days, it attracted tennis fans from far and wide, with men and women invited to compete in open, doubles, and handicap categories.

Over the years, the club moved to various locations around Monaco. It was not until 1928 that it took up permanent residence at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, officially opened by H.S.H. Prince Louis II of Monaco. That year, the competitors included Suzanne Lenglen, nicknamed “The Divine”. Her performance so impressed an American philanthropist, that he lobbied Société des Bains de Mer to build a large tennis complex worthy of the Principality in nearby Saint Roman.

The tournament has changed over the years, particularly with the advent of the Open era in 1969. It is one of the most prestigious events on the tennis calendar, and regularly attracts the greatest players of the day. It is now also one of the Masters 1000 series. In 2006, Monte-Carlo Country Club teamed up with the famous watchmaker, giving the tournament the name it still bears today: the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
