The 2017 Monte-Carlo Automobile Rally
This 85th Rally marks a turning point in the history of the world championship, as the first WRC under new rules
This event marks a turning point in the history of the world championship, because it will be the first WRC under the new rules (implemented for 3 years) and will also see the return to the world scene of two major manufacturers, Citroën and Toyota.
In comparison with the route of 2016, 85% of the route of this 85th Rally will be new. After two-and-a-half days of reconnaissance, scheduled from Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 January, the contestants will fine-tune their final settings on the 3.35 km (2.08 miles) shakedown, which is identical to that of 2016.
Seventeen specials will then be spread over four days of racing, making a total of 382,65 km (237,76 miles), i.e. 5 km (3.10 miles) more than last year. On Thursday evening, the participants will start the rally in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, departing from Monaco at 6.11 p.m., with the Bayons-Bréziers timed section, which will also be on the programme for Saturday afternoon.
Two French Departments will be featured on the Friday, the longest stage of this Monte-Carlo Rally – the Hautes-Alpes and Isère. Another major innovation of this rally will be the 24.63 km (15.3 miles) Agnières-en-Dévoluy special, which will be contested twice.
On Saturday, there will be a new loop of two specials, ending with the Tourniquets de Bayons hairpin bends. The contestants will arrive in Monaco at 9.11 p.m.
Sunday, however, in the Alpes-Maritimes, will be very classic, with contestants covering the Saint-Roch and Turini mountain passes section twice, departing from Monaco at 7.40 a.m. with the return scheduled for 1.53 p.m., all without any assistance.
